Why Facebook Places?

Facebook has been offering Nearby Places in their app for some time, and yet more than 8 out of 10 businesses still don't use this facility.

This Facebook service is a directory of businesses in specific areas like towns and cities. Listings in this directory show up when a Facebook user uses the FB application to search for nearby businesses.

More and more people are using Facebook to find the things they want, and to find leisure activities. They search local areas for things like restaurants, coffee shops, clothing, and other retail items. Also entertainment venues like bars, nightclubs, concerts, parties, and cinemas.

Facebook is fast becoming one of the top ways to find local businesses!

And since over 80% of local businesses are not using these types of “near me” local marketing methods, businesses that do use them are literally cleaning up when it comes to local Facebook search.

They simply love this method because it opens up a new way for them to get fresh customers in the door, visiting their websites, and buying products and services from them. It is a way to tap into a massive audience of Facebook users looking for things that the businesses sell in their very neighbourhood.

Facebook Place Tips

Place Tips are a notification that occurs in the Facebook user’s news feed when they are in a location where the feature is enabled, and there is some relationship between the user’s likes, and a friend’s like or recommendation.

These tips are generated on the user’s phone when the user crosses into an area tagged using the GPS and Cellular location of their device. It canalso use any nearby Wi-Fi devices to pinpoint where the user is, and offer place tips for relevant searches or profile information.

Facebook is also working on what is called Bluetooth Beacon technology that can ping phones in a very specific, micro location, such as when a user is walking past a storefront, or walking around a part of the mall.

For this to work, the user must have opted into Place Tips by having location tracking enabled in the FB app settings. Then when the user enters the area, a Place Tip Card is displayed, giving them quick facts about the location. Facts such as info on nearby business, photos, contact details, etc. Included will be any photos or posts tagged for that place.

If the nearby business has a Facebook page in good standing, the card might also show recent posts, images, reviews, events, and offers from the page.

Imagine a potential customer walking by your shop or restaurant and getting a notification about your offers, plus all the social proof telling the customer that your business offers things that they like.

This can double a business’ walk-in traffic overnight with the right offer for a targeted audience. This type of boost is worth a considerable amount because it is hyper-targeted to your exact clientele at a time when the potential customer is nearby.

Facebook Check-In

If you are on Facebook yourself, you have most likely already seen this, probably many times. A check-in on Facebook is a method for friends to announce that they’ve arrived at a particular location, typically a local business such as a restaurant, bar, shop or entertainment venue.

The check-in has the effect of creating a story-line on your account so you and your friends can see where you have been, and any comments that were posted at the time. Typically this is in the form of some praise or review of the business.

The positive effect this has on social proof and reviews cannot be overstated. When a customer checks into a business, their friends see the check-in, and that business is tagged with related interests.

This means that if you ever express some interest in that type of business, the business that your friend checked into will potentially be served to you during a search or when you are in the vicinity.

It will even be placed on a map when Facebook users are browsing the nearby places map feature in the application.

This Check-In feature is a big contributor to organic Facebook page growth, positive reviews, and growth of a business’ local reach. And, together with other factors, is critical to your social media presence, resulting in more new and repeat customers coming through the door.

Facebook Offers & Advertisements

Another highly effective and thus desirable component when working with Facebook Places are Facebook Offers.

These are highly targeted, visual ads with special promotional offers presented to users. These ads show up in people's news feeds and so they are quite different from the traditional sidebar advertisements which tend to get ignored.

Businesses should have compelling, valuable ads in this space, as it will not only serve to bring new people through the door, but also bring back existing customers more quickly.

And should just one single user in that area like, comment, or check into a store making such an offer, then that offer will also be displayed to all of their friends having a similar interest.
